In an air conditioning system (HVAC), regulating air flow is a key factor to ensure stable operating performance, save energy and maintain user comfort. One of the devices that plays an important role in this process is VCD. So how does VCD work?

1. What is VCD?

Volume Control Damper is a specialized device used to adjust air flow in the duct system. Valves are often installed on main or auxiliary pipe branches, helping to control the speed and amount of air passing through different areas in the building.


2. Basic structure of VCD

Standard VCDs typically include:

  • Valve frame: Made from galvanized steel, stainless steel or aluminum, with square or round dimensions depending on the system.

  • Valve leaf (valve spoke): Metal blades are mounted on the rotating shaft, can open and close at the same time.
  • Lever or control motor: Helps users adjust the opening angle of the valve leaf, thereby controlling the amount of air.
  • Drive shaft: Connects the valve leaflets, ensuring synchronous movement.
  • Rubber seal (optional): Helps reduce air leakage and noise during operation.

3. How does VCD work?

🔧 Mechanism of action:

  • When the operator turns the lever, the drive shaft moves the valve leaflets at the same time. The larger the opening angle of the valve leaf, the more air flow passes through.
  • In the automatic system, the valve can be mounted with an electric motor or servo actuator, receiving signals from the BMS system to automatically adjust the opening angle.
  • When it is necessary to completely block the airflow, the user simply closes the valve leaf vertically – at this point air cannot pass through.

⚙️ Depending on the purpose, VCD can be adjusted:

  • Fully open (all wind passes through)
  • Partial open (traffic restriction)
  • Completely closed (prevents air circulation)

4. Application of VCD

VCD is widely used in systems:

  • Pressure control of clean rooms and labs
  • Balance air flow between areas
