EI fireproof air ducts covered with gypsum board are commonly used in projects with high requirements on fire safety, specifically:
- Smoke extraction system: In high-rise buildings, shopping malls, cinemas, hospitals, factories...
- Main ventilation system: Especially pipes going through fire compartments, escape areas, basements, garages.
- High risk areas: Industrial kitchens, warehouses storing flammable materials.
- Effective fire resistance: Fireproof gypsum board can withstand high temperatures and maintain integrity and insulation for a long time, helping to prevent the spread of fire and smoke.
- Diverse fire resistance limits: Can reach fire resistance limits from EI30 to EI120 (corresponding to 30 to 120 minutes), suitable for many different requirements of the project.
- Reasonable price: Compared to some other fireproof materials such as MGO, gypsum-coated air ducts often have lower initial investment costs.
- Easy to find materials: Fireproof gypsum board is a popular material on the market.
- Aesthetics: The smooth surface of the gypsum board can be painted in the required color to match the interior architecture.
- Good sound insulation: Helps reduce noise in the ventilation system.
- Environmental safety: Gypsum material does not contain asbestos, is environmentally friendly and safe for users.
EI fireproof gypsum board air ducts are often multi-layered to ensure fire resistance and insulation:
- Innermost layer (duct core): Usually galvanized steel with a minimum thickness of 0.75 mm (can be thicker depending on requirements). This layer ensures mechanical strength, load-bearing capacity, corrosion resistance and is the foundation for the duct structure.
- Fireproof insulation layer: This is the most important layer, usually made from materials such as:
- Fireproof plasterboard (Plasterboard FireShield): Made from gypsum powder, glass fiber and special fire retardant additives. This plasterboard is usually pink in color. The thickness of the plasterboard varies depending on the required EI fire resistance limit.
- EI30: Usually use plasterboard with a thickness of about 20mm - 21mm (can be one layer or a combination of layers).
- EI45: Overall thickness is about 25mm.
- EI60: Overall thickness is about 33mm or 15.9mm plasterboard combined with other materials.
- EI90: Overall thickness is about 50mm (can be two layers of fireproof panels, each layer is 24mm).
- EI120: Overall thickness is about 53mm (can be two layers of fireproof panels, each layer is 20mm and 32mm).
- Mineral wool or glass wool: Some manufacturers can combine an additional layer of mineral wool or high-density glass wool to enhance the insulation and soundproofing ability.
- Outer layer: Usually galvanized steel sheet with a thickness of about 0.58mm (can be changed), which protects the inner insulation layer from external impacts and increases aesthetics.
